Lee Bollinger Envisions the Role of Universities in a Global Society
Lee Bollinger, president of Columbia University, recommended that universities adapt to the fast pace of globalisation by building international partnerships and collaborative projects across borders. Bollinger made the remarks in a public lecture entitled “Universities for a Global Society” at the LKY School on October 27.

LKY School 5th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Dialogue with MM Lee Kuan Yew
To mark the occasion, the School hosted a gala dinner for 800 guests, including government ministers, ambassadors, business and civil-society leaders, the School’s governing board, faculty and students. Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew was the guest of honour and participated in a dialogue session with the guests.

Schwartz Outlines Surprises Awaiting the World in the 21st Century
Peter Schwartz, cofounder and chairman of Global Business Network, outlined the major surprises likely in the 21st century during a public lecture on August 6 at the LKY School. He described key scenarios in global economics, social change, geopolitics, social change, science, and the environment.

Economic Resource Book Launched
“Economics in Public Policies — The Singapore Story”, a resource book on economic concepts and principles was officially launched by Singapore’s Minister for Finance, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam before a large gathering of academics and scholars. Produced by the Ministry of Education and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the book hopes to enrich not just undergraduate or “A” level economics students, but also serve as a reference material for public officials and anyone interested in public policy-making.

LKY School hosts launch of World Trade Report 2009 in Asia
In times of economic crisis, governments face pressure to adopt measures which may restrict trade. There are real dangers that such pressures may lead to protectionism. In such instances, the World Trade Organization (WTO) says “contingency measures” can act as a safety valve and can play an important role in maintaining multilateral trade.

UNESCAP Launches Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2009 at the LKY School
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is launching its flagship publication, Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2009, in partnership with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. The theme of the 2009 Survey is “Addressing Triple Threats to Development”. The Survey analyses how the financial, food, fuel and climate change challenges have affected Asia and the Pacific, and considers ways of addressing them. Central to this report is the idea that the convergence of multiple crises presents an opportunity for the region to reorient economic growth towards a long term development path that is more inclusive and sustainable. Governments will have to play a key role in forming and framing the region’s future development path, and economies of the region will be able to tackle these challenges best by bolstering national policy actions with key concerted regional cooperation initiatives that, in turn, can serve as building blocks of a more inclusive multilateral system. The Survey is also being launched in several other cities in the region and at UN Headquarters in New York and Geneva.

LKY School Releases Task Force Report “Asia and the Global Economic Crisis”
The Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy has organized a Task Force on “Asia and the Global Economic Crisis,” which is launching a report that highlights some critical policy recommendations for global, G-20, and Asian policy makers. The Report is the result of research and discussions among LKY School faculty and external experts and practitioners with deep insight into matters at the heart of the crisis. It hopes to contribute to the ongoing discussion and debate on the crisis, and will be disseminated to a wide range of analysts and policymakers.

Indian Minister of Railways Lalu Prasad Describes Railways’ Dramatic Transformation
Indian Railways (IR), the world’s largest employer and busiest railway network in the world, transformed from a loss-making organisation on the verge of bankruptcy to one with revenues of US$6 billion in 2007. India’s Minister of Railways Lalu Prasad told a standing-room-only audience at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy the story of how he engineered this dramatic turnaround with a budget of just $200 million when he took the top post of this national institution in 2004.
