Minister: Companies must be socially responsible
Retrenchment should only be conducted as a matter of last resort, and companies must be socially responsible in their restructuring efforts even during a downturn, said Minister for Manpower Gan Kim Yong. "Good relations should not be taken for granted"
In IPS discussions on Integration in Singapore, participants said that while Singapore made a creditable effort at welcoming foreigners, harmonious relations should not be taken for granted. IPS' Goh Chok Tong book is a bestseller
The 1,500 copies of the first paperback print run of the book on Mr Goh Chok Tong and his administration have sold out. NUS Press and IPS, the co-publishers, have printed another 1,000 copies of the book, titled Impressions of the Goh Chok Tong Years in Singapore. Mr Arun Mahizhnan, IPS Deputy Director and a co-editor of the book with IPS Senior Research Fellow Tan Tarn How, says, “We are very glad to note that this book has struck a chord with so many readers. It was considered a risky venture because of the subject matter but the success of the sales reassures us that the Singapore public is mature enough to deal with such subjects."

Social Immune System Supplements Govt Regulation in New Media
Government regulation, industry self-regulation and co-regulation of the Internet will not be enough to keep the online “barbarians at the gate”. Instead, the best defence against the dangers of the Internet is to build a social immune system by helping people understand how to protect themselves, argues IPS Deputy Director Arun Mahizhnan. He made this point in a Keynote Speech at the International Workshop on Regulatory Policies for New Media at Leipzig, Germany recently.
