Dr Tan Ern Ser is Faculty Associate at the Institute of Policy Studies.
He received his PhD in Sociology from Cornell University, USA. He has written on social stratification, welfare policy, ethnic relations, and politics and democracy. He is author of Does Class Matter? Social Stratification and Orientations in Singapore (2004).
Dr Tan is principal consultant to the National Orientations of Singaporeans (NOS) survey series I-IV. He is also co-principal investigator (with Dr Gillian Koh) of Asian Barometer-Singapore. He was consultant to the National Survey of Senior Citizens 2005 as well as the Learning Needs of Senior Citizens 2008. He is a member of the Economic and Social Research Network, the Family Research Network, and the HDB Research Advisory Panel. He also chairs REACH’s policy study workgroup on integration.
He is currently conducting research on a sequel to his 2001 study on social stratification in Singapore, as well as collaborating with Dr Yap Mui Teng and Dr Kang Soon Hock on the National Survey of Senior Citizens 2010.
