Family Research Network Forum to focus on child development and resilience
The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports are co-organising the Third Family Research Network (FRN) Forum which will focus on child development and resilience. The FRN is an initiative to bring together a network of academics, researchers and policy-makers through a series of forums to engage in regular discussions on family research. The forthcoming forum will be held on 28 August 2009 (Friday).

Upcoming symposium to look at gerontology landscape in SE and E Asia
The Council for Third Age (C3A), an independent body that promotes active ageing, and IPS are co-organising a two-day symposium that will look into the ways in which training and research in ageing studies are being carried out in both Southeast Asia and East Asia. The ultimate goal is to identify a set of best practices that could be shared among participants. The workshop will be held on 1 and 2 October 2009.

IPS Roundtable in the City: The Singapore FreePort Story
The Singapore FreePort is a high-security facility for international auction houses, art dealers, fine art logistic companies, private collectors to store and trade freely their prized collections. Mr Alain Vandenborre will speak on how he and his Swiss partners have turned a vision into market reality and developed what is a first for Singapore.

Temasek CEO speaks on Temasek’s strategy and future
IPS hosted Temasek Holdings' Executive Director and CEO, Ms Ho Ching at a Corporate Associates Lunch on 29 July 2009. To mark the 35th Anniversary of the holding company, Ms Ho was invited to outline the future of Temasek to the 100-strong corporate audience. Temasek's core purpose continues to be delivering sustainable long-term value, she said. Growth opportunities will be sought, not just within Asia, but also in Latin America and the rest of the world.

Economic downturn focus at 11th Singapore Economic Roundtable
The 11th Singapore Economic Roundtable, organised by IPS and The Business Times, saw much of the discussion centring on the current economic downturn and government policies responding to the downturn. The Jobs Credit Scheme also came under particular examination by discussants and participants alike. The SER was attended by academics, policymakers and businessmen.

Book on Goh Chok Tong PM-ship to be launched
A 545-page book on Mr Goh Chok Tong and his administration during his years as Prime Minister will be launched on 6 Aug 2009. The 45 essays in the volume review a range of issues from domestic politics and foreign policy to economic development, society, culture, the arts and media. Titled Impressions of the Goh Chok Tong Years in Singapore, it is co-edited by Bridget Welsh, James Chin, and IPS' Arun Mahizhnan and Tan Tarn How, and is co-published by IPS and NUS Press.

Second Little Red Dot volume “… a rare combination of intelligence and human sympathy”
The sequel to the runaway IPS bestseller The Little Red Dot is now out. This second volume, The Little Red Dot: Reflections by Singapore’s Diplomats Volume II, contains essays written by the third generation of young ambassadors. It is co-edited by IPS Chairman Professor Tommy Koh and Associate Director Chang Li Lin. Well-known retired British diplomat Frank Berman says: “This volume and its predecessor tell the individual stories of a group of men and women reaching for that level of achievement with a rare combination of intelligence and human sympathy.”

Building trust between Singaporeans and foreigners
Set out due diligence processes that have been performed in the course of recruitment; spell out limits and obligations for foreigners clearly; and fund integration activities in a thoughtful manner. IPS Research Fellow Leong Chan Hoong makes these suggestions for Singapore in a commentary for The Straits Times, and argues that Singaporeans must be convinced of the place of foreigners in Singapore’s broader picture for the Singapore Promise to be realised.

IPS Fellow reports from Tashkent
IPS Research Fellow Lee Yoong Yoong attended a recent conference on Uzbekistan's experience in democracy and parliamentary elections in July 2009. The conference comes a time when the emerging democracy is gearing up for parliamentary elections slated for the end of the year. He writes a brief of the proceedings, along with some cultural observations of the Central Asian country.
