Economic issues constitute a particularly important area of research and analysis for IPS. Over the years, IPS has dealt with a wide variety of issues, including macroeconomic policies (fiscal, monetary and exchange rate policies), empirical and policy issues relating to trade and investment flows, globalisation and regionalisation, manpower needs, entrepreneurship development and general issues with reference to Singapore and the global economy. The specific focus for each year depends on the exigencies of policy making, the country’s economic needs, and factors impacting the region and global economy.
IPS is increasingly paying attention to economic developments in the larger Asian region, especially the emergence of giant economies such as China and India, as well as the growing integration of the ASEAN plus three (APT) economies and their impact on Singapore.
Recently IPS was involved in a large scale study on economic restructuring through the IPS Forum on Economic Restructuring (IFER). The IFER was set up as a parallel effort to the government’s own Economic Restructuring Committee (ERC) deliberations. The IFER Report was the culmination of a seven month long research, analysis and discussion by about 85 business leaders, academics and policy makers.
Research and analysis on domestic and international economic issues will continue to be a major focus of IPS. This is an area where IPS has engaged several adjunct fellows to augment internal staff strength. Currently there are three adjunct fellows working with IPS.
